               - Chinook Indian Creation Legend

The Chinook Indians, who were also known as the ‘Flat Heads’ because of their extensive practice of artificial cranial deformation, have a creation myth in which
Italapas, or
Coyote, drove the waters of the Deluge away from the prairies and enabled mankind to start life anew. There are also stories resembling the
Popul Vuh dealing with the adventures of
Blue-Jay and his sister
Ioi. Memories of some cosmic catastrophe are found in the story of
Aqas-Xena-Xenas.
